Managing Migraine Pain Effectively

Migraine headaches involve moderate to severe pain, usually one side of the head. However, approximately one third of migraines affect both sides of the head and the pain can be intense and debilitating. Attacks are often accompanied by disabling symptoms such as nausea, visual disturbances and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

A migraine episode often happens in stages which can last from 4 to 72 hours. This can have a severe impact on a person’s daily functioning so finding treatment is essential. A clinical study took place to compare the tramadol effects combined with paracetamol to an inactive placebo treatment for acute migraine pain.

Compared to placebo, patients in the Ultram/paracetamol group were more likely to be free of pain at the following intervals:

• At 2 hours, 22.1% compared to 9.3% for placebo
• At 6 hours, 42.9% compared to 25.2% for placebo
• At 24 hours, 52.7% compared to 37.9% for placebo

The study concluded that this combination analgesic treatment may be effective for the management of moderate to severe migraine headaches.

Tramadol for Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a condition that is characterised by pain and inflammation in one or more joints. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis involves the deterioration of cartilage in joints whereas rheumatoid arthritis happens when the immune system attacks the joints.

A clinical trial was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of the extended-release tablets in the treatment of pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee. Altogether, 552 patients with moderate to severe pain were randomly allocated to receive extended-release tablets or placebo.
